Hold thumbs!

Thumb-hold-illustration_small

Sit back for a few minutes and wrap the fingers of one hand around the thumb of the other hand. Notice how you are feeling – is your body comfortable, is your mind disturbed or restful, what is your emotional tone at this moment? As you continue to gently hold your thumb, allow yourself to relax, and be as comfortable as you can be in that moment. Without any effort (no massaging, no pressure) simply drop the shoulders, exhale and hold the thumb for around 5 minutes. What do you notice? Is there a difference in the way you are feeling?

It may seem really "simple" however holding your thumb in this way can be grounding and calming. It is a great helper in times of anxiety, or when feeling overwhelmed. It aids digestion of food and information. It helps us assimilate our life experiences and to be nourished by life. Some insomniacs find holding their thumb helps them sleep. It can help us breathe more easily and help clear congestion in the head including headaches. It can never do any harm. This is some of the simple wisdom and practice of Jin Shin Jyutsu, an ancient art of bringing harmony to body, mind and heart using only gentle non-invasive touch. It is possible to go for sessions to a certified practitioner, or to learn to use Jin Shin Jyutsu for ourselves - for this no special ability is needed.
